Frequently Asked Questions
What boat brands can you buy in Oklahoma?
Dealers in Oklahoma carry Avalon, Azimut, Bayliner, Bennington, Boston Whaler, Chaparral, Cobalt and Crest, both new and pre-owned depending on the dealer.
Do you need a boating license in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma does not require a boating license for most recreational operators; its rule is age based, not tied to a birth date. Operators ages 12 through 15 must carry a boater education card to run a motorboat over 10 horsepower, a sailboat 16 feet or longer, or any personal watercraft. They also need adult supervision as specified by the state. Rental customers are not separately exempt, so these rules still apply to rentals. Listed exemptions include qualifying nonresidents, sanctioned event participants, and supervised personal watercraft operation in a no wake zone. The Department of Public Safety may issue a 30 day temporary card and administers the program through the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

What boating regulations should you know about in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma's boating rules sit with more than one agency, so some of the detail depends on which water you are on. Operators aged 12 through 15 must complete approved boating education to operate a boat over 10 horsepower or a personal watercraft; a boat operator also needs an adult 18 or older aboard in a position to take control, and a personal watercraft operator must be visually supervised by an adult 18 or older within 500 yards. Current registration must be carried in the boat while it is in operation. The Legislature lowered the boating under the influence limit to a 0.08 blood alcohol concentration in 2011. On Grand River Dam Authority waters, which include Grand Lake and Lake Hudson, children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket on vessels under 26 feet, everyone on a personal watercraft must wear one, and no wake applies within 150 feet of any boat ramp, dock, pier, or anchored or moored vessel.

When is the best time of year to go boating in Oklahoma?
The best overall boating window in Oklahoma is late May through September. June through August is the peak for hot weather and water recreation, while May and September through early October are milder shoulder periods. Summer is popular at Oklahoma lake parks, so expect more visitors during the hottest months.
Weather is the main tradeoff. Thunderstorms peak in May across southeastern Oklahoma, June across much of the rest of the state, and July in the western Panhandle. Rainfall, flooding and drought can affect reservoir levels, so review current lake measurements before launching.

What are the best places to go boating in Oklahoma?
Some of Oklahoma’s best boating spans broad recreational lakes, clear mountain water, central metro lakes and scenic rivers. Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in northeastern Oklahoma offers expansive open water for cruising and personal watercraft. In the southeast, forested Broken Bow Lake has exceptionally clear water for boating and scuba diving, while the Lower Mountain Fork River suits canoe and kayak trips. Lake Murray provides watersports amid the south central Arbuckle foothills, and Lake Thunderbird near Norman offers convenient central Oklahoma access with marinas and multiple boat ramps.

What are the most popular boating destinations in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma’s most popular boating destinations include Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees near Grove, known for its extensive shoreline and varied recreation areas; Broken Bow Lake, prized for clear water, forested scenery and boating; Lake Eufaula, the state’s largest lake and a favorite for boating, fishing and sandy beaches; Lake Murray near Ardmore, popular for watersports amid wooded Arbuckle Mountain foothills; and Lake Thunderbird near Norman, convenient for central Oklahoma boaters with two marinas and nine boat ramps.

How old do you have to be to rent a boat in Oklahoma?
For a motorboat with more than 10 horsepower, age 16 is the minimum for operation without the youth supervision rule, and the same threshold applies to a personal watercraft. Under Oklahoma’s Kyle Williams Boating Safety Education Act, operators ages 12 through 15 must complete approved boating safety education and carry their card. For a motorboat, a competent adult age 18 or older must be aboard and positioned to take immediate control. Personal watercraft operators ages 12 through 15 need visual supervision by a competent adult age 18 or older within 500 yards. The rental operator sets its own minimum, so confirm it when booking.
