Young’s Marine

Nebraska law requires a person to be at least 18 to rent a motorboat or personal watercraft from a boat livery. Under Nebraska Revised Statute 37-1241.07, someone younger than 18 may operate a craft rented by a person 18 or older only if the younger operator is at least 14 and holds a valid boating safety certificate.

The operating minimum is 14 for both motorboats and personal watercraft. Anyone born after December 31, 1985, must complete an approved boating safety course and carry the certificate while operating. A rental operator may impose stricter requirements, so confirm its minimum when booking.

No, Nebraska does not issue a traditional boating license, but many operators need a boater education certificate. Anyone born after December 31, 1985, must complete an approved course and carry the certificate while operating a motorboat or personal watercraft; every operator must be at least 14. Rental customers are not exempt, and those covered by the birth date rule need proof for rented craft powered by gas, diesel or electricity. Rentals may be made only to adults, although an authorized operator ages 14 through 17 may drive with a valid certificate. Nonresidents may use qualifying NASBLA approved certification. Nebraska Game and Parks administers the program and does not identify a temporary rental certificate option.

Nebraska’s best boating choices span large reservoirs, eastern lakes and a scenic river corridor. In western Nebraska, Lake McConaughy provides broad water for boating and watersports. Calamus Reservoir offers a Sandhills setting, while Lewis and Clark Lake anchors boating in the northeast. Branched Oak Lake is a convenient eastern Nebraska option near Lincoln and Omaha. For a different experience, the Niobrara River winds through north-central Nebraska and is especially well suited to canoeing and kayaking.

Popular Nebraska boating destinations include Lake McConaughy near Ogallala, the state’s largest reservoir, for white sand beaches, water skiing, tubing and sailing; Lewis and Clark Lake near Crofton, Nebraska’s second largest reservoir, for popular boating, Missouri River access and expedition history; Calamus Reservoir, for its beach and rolling Sandhills setting; and Branched Oak Lake near Lincoln, an easy trip from Lincoln or Omaha. At Lake McConaughy, boat ramp availability depends on water levels, so review current park notices before towing a boat.
