Virginia sets no minimum age to operate a motorboat, but Code of Virginia § 29.1-748 requires a personal watercraft operator to be at least 16; a 14- or 15-year-old may operate one only after completing an approved boating safety course and carrying proof. DWR says all personal watercraft operators age 14 and older and all operators, regardless of age, of motorboats with engines of 10 horsepower or more must meet boating safety education requirements. Onboard direct supervision requires a qualified person to maintain close visual and verbal contact, provide adequate direction, and be able to immediately assume control. Each rental operator sets its own minimum age, so confirm it when booking.

A PWC operator must be at least 16, except a 14 or 15 year old may operate after completing an approved course and carrying proof. Compliance can also come from a rental or lease agreement naming the authorized operator, a nonrenewable 90 day temporary operator’s certificate issued with a newly acquired boat’s registration, direct onboard supervision by a compliant operator, or certain qualifying maritime, military, nonresident, and commercial fishing credentials.

From Hampton, you can spend the day on the Hampton River, Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Bay, Salt Ponds or Back River. Launch at Sunset Creek Boat Ramp for a marked creek and river route along the Hampton waterfront; the Hampton River opens into Hampton Roads, a working harbor with deep channels and heavy ship traffic, then into open Chesapeake Bay water at Old Point Comfort. Salt Ponds is a harbor reached from the Bay through a privately dredged, privately marked inlet. For shallow water exploring, the Gosnold’s Hope Park ramp connects by canal to the Southwest Branch of Back River; farther up, Back River’s branches are generally only 2 to 5 feet deep.

Boaters from Hampton can plan day trips to Factory Point, Fort Monroe and Yorktown’s Riverwalk Landing. Factory Point is a popular boating destination on Hampton’s Chesapeake Bay shoreline, where beach recreation is the main draw. Fort Monroe pairs Chesapeake Bay marina access with a historic waterfront fort. Riverwalk Landing sits on the York River and offers public piers for pleasure boats, with a beach, restaurants and shops close to the docks.
