Rhode Island sets no general minimum age for operating a motorboat alone. A child may operate a boat other than a personal watercraft alone with a boating safety certificate; without one, the child must be directly supervised onboard by someone age 18 or older who meets the education requirement. A certificate is required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1986 who operates a vessel with more than 10 horsepower, and for every personal watercraft operator regardless of age. DEM says a certified child under 16 may operate a personal watercraft. Rental operators set their own minimum age, so confirm it when booking.

From Newport, you can boat around Newport Harbor, anchor in Brenton Cove, explore the outer harbor near Rose Island, or continue into Narragansett Bay through East Passage. The inner harbor east of Goat Island is the close-in, slow choice; NOAA marks its entrance as a 5 mph no-wake zone.

Brenton Cove has good holding and is frequently used by yachts. Rose Island is surrounded by shoal water, so navigate carefully around it. East Passage is the bay’s principal passage and the direct route farther up Narragansett Bay. Newport’s listed launch ramps include Elm Street, Fort Adams State Park and King Park.

Boaters leaving Newport Harbor can make three practical Narragansett Bay day trips: Rose Island, Wickford Harbor, and Bristol Harbor. Rose Island suits a ferry or small craft outing for its restored lighthouse museum, beaches, and picnic setting; private boats may not use the dock or anchor there. Wickford Harbor is an easy sail from Newport and offers transient moorings, shopping, and a classic village atmosphere. Bristol Harbor provides town docks and a designated anchorage, with historic shops and restaurants a short walk from the waterfront.
