To operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower alone, an operator must be at least 12 and hold an SBC or CPWO; under 12 requires an onboard certificate holder age 18 or older. From Norwalk, put in at Veterans Park and follow the Norwalk River through Norwalk Harbor to Long Island Sound. The inner harbor is a 6 mph, minimal-wake zone, while the Sound beyond is open water. Sheffield Island Harbor is the main harbor approach and has established anchoring water. Cockenoe Harbor is another recognized anchorage, but nearby shoals and rocks demand careful navigation. Around the Norwalk Islands, NOAA describes irregular bottom, broken ground, oyster stakes and spars, so consult the chart and avoid shoal areas.

Boaters from Norwalk have several practical day-trip choices on Long Island Sound. Sheffield Island Harbor and Cockenoe Harbor are good anchoring destinations; Sheffield adds lighthouse scenery, while Cockenoe Island has a sand spit. The Saugatuck River leads toward Westport and has small-craft facilities near its bridges, Stamford Harbor offers anchorages and additional small-craft facilities, and Great Captain Island has a municipal beach, picnic areas and a historic lighthouse.

Charts matter around the Norwalk Islands because the bottom is irregular and includes rocks, shoals and oyster stakes.
