Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time of year to go boating in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma?
June through early September is the best bet for warm-water boating on Lake Hefner, though Oklahoma City does not post a seasonal opening or closing date; its boating page says permit holders may use city lakes any time or day. Lake Hefner measured around 80 degrees in a late-June wildlife report and in the low 80s in an early-September USGS reading.
For the best day, check Lake Hefner’s USGS wind-speed and gage-height readings before launching at the City Boat Harbor or Lake Patrol Station ramp. Let those current conditions guide your choice of outing.

Where can you go boating from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma?
From Oklahoma City, you can launch on Lake Hefner, Lake Stanley Draper, Lake Overholser, the Oklahoma River or Lake Thunderbird. Lake Hefner is the open-water choice: wakes are allowed in open areas, with ramps at City Boat Harbor and the Lake Patrol Station. Lake Stanley Draper suits powerboating and water skiing, with ramps at Draper Marina. Lake Overholser allows all watercraft but no water skiing, with east-side and dam ramps. The Oklahoma River is a no-wake urban run with three launch areas. In Norman, Lake Thunderbird offers boating, waterskiing, two marinas and nine ramps.

What are the most popular boating destinations near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma?
Boaters in Oklahoma City go to Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge from Lake Overholser, the Boathouse District on the Oklahoma River, Firemen’s Cove on Lake Hefner and North Pointe on Lake Stanley Draper. Stinchcomb offers a refuge paddle whose water access is only through Overholser; the Boathouse District puts paddlers beside downtown riverfront recreation; Firemen’s Cove draws anglers with its enclosed fishing pier; and North Pointe is a practical launch and fishing stop with a boat ramp, tending dock and fishing pier.

Do you need a boating license in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma does not require a boating license for most recreational operators; its rule is age based, not tied to a birth date. Operators ages 12 through 15 must carry a boater education card to run a motorboat over 10 horsepower, a sailboat 16 feet or longer, or any personal watercraft. They also need adult supervision as specified by the state. Rental customers are not separately exempt, so these rules still apply to rentals. Listed exemptions include qualifying nonresidents, sanctioned event participants, and supervised personal watercraft operation in a no wake zone. The Department of Public Safety may issue a 30 day temporary card and administers the program through the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

What boating regulations should you know about in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma's boating rules sit with more than one agency, so some of the detail depends on which water you are on. Operators aged 12 through 15 must complete approved boating education to operate a boat over 10 horsepower or a personal watercraft; a boat operator also needs an adult 18 or older aboard in a position to take control, and a personal watercraft operator must be visually supervised by an adult 18 or older within 500 yards. Current registration must be carried in the boat while it is in operation. The Legislature lowered the boating under the influence limit to a 0.08 blood alcohol concentration in 2011. On Grand River Dam Authority waters, which include Grand Lake and Lake Hudson, children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket on vessels under 26 feet, everyone on a personal watercraft must wear one, and no wake applies within 150 feet of any boat ramp, dock, pier, or anchored or moored vessel.

How old do you have to be to rent a boat in Oklahoma?
For a motorboat with more than 10 horsepower, age 16 is the minimum for operation without the youth supervision rule, and the same threshold applies to a personal watercraft. Under Oklahoma’s Kyle Williams Boating Safety Education Act, operators ages 12 through 15 must complete approved boating safety education and carry their card. For a motorboat, a competent adult age 18 or older must be aboard and positioned to take immediate control. Personal watercraft operators ages 12 through 15 need visual supervision by a competent adult age 18 or older within 500 yards. The rental operator sets its own minimum, so confirm it when booking.
