Nevada does not require a general boating license, but anyone born on or after January 1, 1983 needs proof to operate a power driven vessel over 15 horsepower on interstate waters. The Nevada Department of Wildlife administers the program. It applies to qualifying personal watercraft; PWC operators must be at least 14.

Alternatives include a Coast Guard maritime license or a temporary permit valid 60 days with a new or transferred vessel. Nonresidents age 18 or older may follow home state requirements during visits up to 60 days. For covered rentals, the renter must be 18, the agreement lists authorized operators, and each receives a safety briefing; listed operators under 16 need an authorized operator 18 or older aboard to supervise.

Nevada boaters should follow the core rules in NRS Chapter 488, enforced by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Carry one properly sized, United States Coast Guard approved wearable life jacket for each person aboard. Passengers younger than 13 must wear one while underway, subject to limited exceptions set out in the statute. Operating under the influence is illegal at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher. Motorboats must be numbered and titled; nonmotorized vessels do not require numbering. Everyone aboard a personal watercraft must wear a life jacket, and on a personal watercraft it may not be an inflatable one. Vessels capable of retaining water, including nonmotorized ones, need an aquatic invasive species decal, which expires on December 31 of the year it is issued.

Late May through September is the best general boating window in Nevada, with June through August the peak and May and September serving as shoulder months. At Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor has high visitation from Memorial Day to Labor Day, while spring and fall around Lake Mead alternate between warm and cooler days.

Conditions differ sharply across the state. Lake Tahoe stays cold even on the hottest summer days, and its high elevation weather can change rapidly. Southern Nevada has intense summer heat, while monsoon moisture can bring scattered thunderstorms, heavy rain, flash flooding and lightning around Lake Mead.

Lake Tahoe offers clear mountain water and coves along Nevada’s eastern shore, while Pyramid Lake provides an expansive desert setting north of Reno and Sparks.

Near Boulder City, Lake Mead is a large reservoir with open water and secluded coves. Farther along the southern corridor, the Colorado River through Black Canyon is well suited to paddling beneath Hoover Dam and between steep desert walls.
