Montana sets no rental age in law; the rental company sets its own. What the state sets is who may operate. Children 12 or younger may not operate a motorboat or a personal watercraft powered by a motor rated at more than 10 horsepower unless accompanied by someone 18 or older. Youths of 13 and 14 may not operate those vessels without a valid Montana motorboat operator's safety certificate or evidence of completing an approved boating safety course. So 13 is the youngest an unsupervised operator can be, and only with that certificate. Confirm the rental company's own minimum when booking.

From Whitefish, you can boat Whitefish Lake, continue into the Whitefish River, or trailer to Tally Lake for a separate day trip. Whitefish Lake offers boating and water-skiing, with a public launch at Whitefish Lake State Park. At its confluence with the lake, the Whitefish River becomes a slower route: controlled no-wake applies to JP Road, and the section from the railroad trestle to JP Road allows only manual or electric power. Tally Lake also supports boating and water-skiing, with a ramp and dock at Tally Lake Campground.

Whitefish Lake State Park provides a wooded beach setting with boating, fishing and a picnic shelter, making it a convenient waterside stop during a lake outing.
