At 12, a person may operate a motorboat without supervision in Wisconsin after completing a boating safety course accepted by the Wisconsin DNR. Ages 10 or 11 may operate only with a parent, guardian, or designated adult at least 18 who has a valid boating safety certificate or was born before January 1, 1989. Ages 12 through 15 may use that supervision option instead of certification. Operators 16 or older born on or after January 1, 1989 must have completed an accepted course. No one under 12 may operate a personal watercraft, no one under 16 may rent one, and operators 12 or older must be certified; adult supervision is no substitute. The rental operator sets its own minimum, so confirm it when booking.

From Lake Geneva, you can explore Geneva Bay, the open central waters of Geneva Lake, Williams Bay and Fontana without leaving the lake. The city’s Wrigley Drive access puts you into Geneva Bay; additional public landings are at Williams Bay, Fontana, Linn Road and Hillside Road.

The central traffic area is the place for normal running, while water outside it is slow no wake. Williams Bay has an additional marked slow-speed zone, and Fontana offers municipal launch access near its harbor. For an anchoring stop, Wisconsin DNR identifies the northern shoreline of Big Foot Beach State Park as a good recreation spot, though the park has no launch.

Boaters leaving Lake Geneva usually stay on Geneva Lake and make a circuit of Buttons Bay, Williams Bay, Fontana and Linn Pier Flats. Buttons Bay, along Big Foot Beach State Park, is a popular anchoring and swimming stop; the Wisconsin DNR specifically identifies the park’s northern shoreline as a good place to anchor and recreate.

Williams Bay draws boaters seeking a quieter public-beach shoreline, while Fontana pairs its public beach with marina docking for lunch or dinner. Anglers also visit Linn Pier Flats, which Travel Wisconsin identifies as a productive summer fishing area.
